Description
The Animal Welfare League (AWL) is seeking a compassionate, skilled, and mission-driven Veterinarian to serve as the head of our Medical Department. Our shelter houses an average of 150 animals, many of whom come into our care through humane investigations after suffering cruelty, abandonment, or neglect. This role offers the unique opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of animals who need it most.
Key Responsibilities
Provide medical care to shelter animals, including wellness exams, diagnostics, and treatments.
Perform spay/neuter surgeries as well as additional surgical care for dogs, cats, and rabbits.
Oversee the medical department and work collaboratively with shelter staff in a team-oriented environment.
Examine animals that may serve as evidence in cruelty cases; testify in court when required.
Promote the health and welfare of every animal in AWL’s care.
Position Details
Part-time employment preferred (5–25 hours per week).
Flexible options available: veterinarians interested in contract work on a monthly, quarterly, or bi-annual basis are also encouraged to apply.

Compensation based on experience and level of involvement.

Requirements
Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an accredited institution.
Valid veterinary license in the State of Ohio (or ability to obtain).
Proficiency in spay/neuter surgical procedures; rabbit surgical experience preferred.
Shelter medicine experience strongly preferred, but not required.
Ability to treat animals with histories of neglect, cruelty, or abandonment with compassion and professionalism.
Strong leadership and communication skills.
