For over a century Associated Humane Societies have offered a haven to abused and neglected animals. Founded in 1906, AHS is the LARGEST animal sheltering system in New Jersey. We operate four shelters located in Newark, Tinton Falls, Forked River, and Vineland. Our Forked River facility also includes Popcorn Park. Established in 1977, Popcorn Park is a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused or elderly-exotic animals, birds, farm animals and wildlife (both domestic and exotic).

AHS is looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and caring full-time Veterinary Technician. In this vital role, you’ll assist in keeping all our shelter residents healthy and assist in their journey to finding their new homes. You’ll assist our veterinarian in administering treatments, keeping vital medical records up to date, observing our residents and assisting the entire team in maintaining a clean, healthy working environment. You will also be at the forefront of helping homeless animals to be their healthiest and readiest to find their loving forever homes. Healthy animals are imperative to AHS’ mission. You will help save lives.
Administer medications to sick animals with empathy, care and compassion.
- Observe other shelter animals for signs of illness.
- Perform intakes on new shelter animals with empathy, care & compassion
- Assess medical requests from the office staff daily via Shelter Buddy Report.
- Assist the veterinarian with surgeries and exams.
- Aseptically prepare animals for surgery, monitor anesthesia, and recover surgical animals safely.
- Update medical records with surgeries and treatments.
- Prepare paperwork and medications to go home with adoptions.
- Maintain clean and sterilized equipment for surgery, including surgical packs, gowns, towels, hand drapes.
- Launder bedding and surgical clothes.
- Thoroughly clean and disinfect the medical department, feed and water Medical Department animals.
- Communicate, communicate, communicate any and all concerns related to our animals’ health, behavior and any other points you may have.
- Work closely with the entire AHS for the best possible outcomes for our residents.
- Ability to work with technology and update Shelter Buddy with sick animals.
- Run a weekly report in Shelter Buddy of animals that need updated vet treatments; administer treatments and input in Shelter Buddy.
- Review Medical Request sheet from volunteers.
- Review inventory: order items as needed.
- Deep clean and restock Medical Department
- Perform maintenance on IDEXX machine, ultrasonic cleaner, autoclave.
- Learn something new as a veterinary tech and share it with your team members.
Requirements
- Certification as a veterinary technician is ideal.
- Certification as a veterinary assistant is helpful.
- Keen interest in animal care and rescue
- Commitment to AHS’ mission
- Competency in proper animal handling skills, aseptic technique,
- Ability to use the Shelter Buddy system
- Ability to use a variety of medical equipment within the shelter
- Knowledge of medical terms, common shelter diseases, and commonly used medications.
- Ability to obtain vital measurements from patients (heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature).
- Ability to sometimes work outdoors in an often-noisy environment
- Ability to stand for long periods of time with lots of bending, lifting and walking.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and travel to meetings and conferences as needed.
- Ability to self-energize and to self-assess and seek to learn areas of the job that may require training and study to master.
- Ability to mobilize others to fulfill the mission and vision of AHS with passion and optimism.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
