SoBran is seeking a Clinical Veterinarian II to join its fast-paced team.
DUTY HOURS & LOCATION ASSIGNMENT:
Employees are expected to arrive to work at the time and location specified for the position to which they are assigned. Work hours typically occur between 7:30 am and 4:00 pm M-F, and include coverage outside of core hours when required. These assignments will include working on weekends and holidays on a rotational basis. Weekend/Holiday hours range from 7:30 am – 12:30 pm. Duty hours and location assignments may be modified at the discretion of the Program Management Staff or at the request of the client with or without prior notice.
This position is designated as “essential personnel” requiring attendance during emergency situations, such as inclement weather, mechanical/facility failures or other scheduled or unscheduled institutional closures as directed by Program or client management.
This position will support multiple worksites in the Hampton Roads areas to include Norfolk and Newport News, VA, and any other locations as designated or required by the client or SoBran. Some travel will be associated with this position, this will be determined as needs arise.
DESCRIPTION of DUTIES:
The Clinical Veterinarian II ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures. They participate in and direct the application of veterinary care and medical oversight for the animal colony and multiple sites to include preventative medicine, health surveillance, medical treatment, research support, anesthesia, survival and non-survival surgical manipulations, the use of biological, radiological and chemical hazards and animal transfers within and between institutions. This position includes Attending Veterinarian duties with 2 different contracts, as well as alternate AV duties at another contract.
This person is expected to be familiar with the day-to-day activities, personnel and issues within the facilities. We expect the Clinical Veterinarian II will be forward thinking and create and assist in developing plans to enhance the learning abilities and performance of the staff working on these contracts. The CV II will work closely with the Project/Program Manager and/or Facility Manager(s) and maintain a relationship with all staff.
Duties (non-inclusive list):
Understands and follows all SOP’s and Quality Assurance Standards.
Provides veterinary care consistent with state and federal law, as well as institutional practices, guidelines, and policies.Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines, and policies to maintain AAALAC accreditation of the animal care and use facilities.Serves on multiple IACUC committees; attends IACUC meeting; assists with protocol development, pre-review, and review.
Will serve as the Attending Veterinarian for ODU and CNU, and alternate AV for EVMS.Will serve as backup/on call veterinarian at EVMS.
Provides regular and timely monitoring and evaluation all animal species. Tasks include recommending, directing and applying appropriate corrective measures to maintain colony health or in response to adverse complications resulting from unanticipated medical conditions or research manipulations.
Directs the application of therapeutic treatment to include the initiation, administration, alteration, and termination of treatment regimens.
Follows and directs the application of all institutional preventive medicine, quarantine, conditioning, and isolation procedures.
Assists in the development and application of animal health surveillance and environmental sanitation programs.
Performs routine, emergency and research related surgical manipulations and sample collections.
Participates in animal study proposal review and procedure scheduling.
Participates in new investigator orientation programs.
Assists with staff training and skill evaluation.
Participates in required training and continuing educational activities to maintain certification and licensure requirements.
Communicates with various parties including SoBran staff, other Veterinarians, Investigative Staff, and other internal and external contacts.
Provides scheduled and emergency after-hours veterinary care as required.
Participates in weekend and holiday veterinary care assignments and duty rotations.
Must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs., bend, stoop, climb, and stand for a prolonged period.
A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM/VMD) from an accredited program.If degree not attained in the U.S., a certificate (ECFVG or similar) of equivalent training accepted by the American Veterinary Medical Association is required.
Completion of an accredited training program in Laboratory Animal Medicine; or a minimum of 6 years equivalent experience; American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Board certified preferred.
License & Certification Requirements:
Candidate must hold a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Virginia or reciprocal state within the U.S.
Candidate preferred to hold a current Diplomate certification in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine; or be eligible to sit for and successfully complete the board examination within 2 years of appointment to the position.
DEA and VA Board of Pharmacy license will be required.
3-6 years of experience as a Clinical Veterinarian in the Laboratory Animal field working with multiple species including non-human primates, swine, and rodents.
