Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in East Greenwich, RI is in need of another criticalist. The hospital is a 26,000 sq. ft. facility with a recently added Specialty Center. OSVS provides referral and emergency services to RI, eastern CT, and southern MA. There is no general practice associated with the hospital. Equipment includes digital radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, laparoscopy, fluoroscopy, mechanical ventilation, telemetry, and state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. The staff includes specialists in internal medicine (5), surgery (3), cardiology, radiology, emergency/critical care (2), neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, clinical pathology, and avian/exotics, as well as a large group of very experienced emergency clinicians. The support staff is highly trained and enthusiastic about continuing education. The technicians working in the intensive care unit are capable of managing most nursing cases, including those on mechanical ventilation, peritoneal dialysis, continuous thoracic drainage, etc. There is a well-respected rotating internship, emergency/critical care residency, emergency/surgery internship, and surgery residency. The emergency caseload is high, and the cases routinely challenging.
The criticalist would be expected to manage critical inpatients, see some emergencies, supervise interns, residents and emergency doctors, and help the surgery and other departments with critical patients – especially during anesthetic procedures. The schedule is fixed and includes one weekend shift a week. What makes this practice unique is the large team of specialists and emergency doctors who practice extremely high level medicine while maintaining a fun atmosphere that keeps doctors here longterm.
