The program is a paid three-year training which includes a one-year immersive role as emergency veterinarian at Capital District Veterinary Referral Hospital. The program combines lectures (in person and online), interactive seminars, labs, one-on-one mentoring and hands-on practical experience.
The first year will consist of two 16-week blocks and one 20-week block. The first 16 weeks of initial training will consist of 4 weeks of one-on-one mentorship with a board-certified critical care specialist and 12 weeks of immersive training, guided by experienced emergency clinicians and the specialists at Capital District. The second 16 weeks will consist of offsite specialty training (at Ethos hospitals in MA and NH) covering Internal Medicine, Surgery, and General Practice, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Neurology, and high-volume Critical Care & ICU. The final 20 weeks of the first year will consist of experiential training at Capital District Veterinary Hospital and include primary case responsibility for emergency cases with experienced emergency clinicians working side-by-side with you during all scheduled shifts. Specialists, including a radiologist, surgeon, and criticalist, will be available for consultation on site or by phone. In addition, there will be weekly didactic opportunities to include: journal club, on site lectures, webinars, case reviews, and wet labs.
The second year will consist of a 6-week block of offsite training including 1 week to participate in WVC Core Surgery Procedures for the Small Animal Practitioner, a week each of Cardiology, Neurology, and Surgery/General Practice, and 2 weeks of Internal Medicine. The remainder of the year will consist of experiential training at Capital District Veterinary Hospital guided by our experienced emergency clinicians and the specialists.
Candidates must be eligible for or have licenses in NY, MA, and NH.

Our hospital includes 9 exam rooms and a bereavement room, a newly renovated four surgery suite enclosed surgery annex, a 40 cage ICU, a 6- table treatment area and an isolation suite. Diagnostic imaging capabilities include digital radiography, an 8 slice CT and ultrasound. In addition to providing 24/7 emergency care, our specialties include critical care, surgery, radiology and dermatology.
