The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association, established in 1863 & representing over 95,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking an Assistant Director of Media Relations to join our Marketing & Communications team located in our headquarters office in Schaumburg, IL. Structured to work for its members, AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership and for the profession. Our mission is to lead the profession by advocating for our members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health.
Reporting to the Division Director of Public Relations and supervising a Media Relations team of 3; the Assistant Director is responsible for developing and implementing media relations strategies designed to promote, protect and advance the AVMA brand; and to enhance awareness and positive perceptions of the veterinary profession within the veterinary community and the general public. This position is also responsible for raising awareness of AVMA’s work on behalf of the veterinary profession through compelling media and social media outreach. Up to 10% travel.

5-7 years of related work experience in media relations/public information, preferably in an association
BS/BA or MS degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related discipline
Strong writing and editing skills are required
Must be enthusiastic and innovative
Strong supervisory and project management skills are required
Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written & verbal)
Must be able to interact and effectively communicate both with members of the scientific and non-scientific community
Able to organize, plan and manage group meetings
Must be able to handle multiple priorities and deadlines, functioning well autonomously and as a team member
Basic computer skills are required including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and various internet Web browsers
