Avian and Exotic Pet Clinic of Roanoke

Company Overview

Founded in 2010 by Dr. Paul Stewart, Avian and Exotic Pet Clinic of Roanoke was established to provide the highest standard of veterinary care for unique pets throughout Southwest Virginia and beyond. Dr. Stewart brings over 29 years of veterinary experience, offering comprehensive medical, surgical, therapeutic, and preventative care for a wide variety of species.

Our hospital specializes in the care of birds such as cockatiels, parrots, pigeons, and doves; small mammals including ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, mice, gerbils, and hamsters; as well as hedgehogs, sugar gliders, reptiles, amphibians, and other exotic species. In addition, we are proud to support local zoological care, including services for Mill Mountain Zoo.

We believe every pet deserves compassionate, knowledgeable veterinary care while recognizing the importance of working within each owner’s individual needs and budget. Our team is dedicated not only to diagnosing and treating illness but also to educating pet owners about proper husbandry, nutrition, preventative care, and early disease recognition. Through client education and proactive veterinary medicine, we strive to minimize health risks, strengthen the bond between people and their pets, and help reduce long-term veterinary expenses whenever possible.

"Enhancing the lives of unique pets through experienced veterinary care, advanced medicine, compassionate communication and lifelong prevention."

Company History

Avian and Exotic Pet Clinic of Roanoke is proud to be the only veterinary hospital in Southwest Virginia dedicated exclusively to the care of birds and exotic companion animals. Established with a passion for providing advanced veterinary medicine for unique species, our hospital has grown into a trusted destination for exotic pet owners and zoological collections throughout Southwest, South and Central Virginia, West Virginia, and beyond.

Our practice focuses on the comprehensive medical and surgical care of a diverse range of species, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, rodents, axolotls, and other unique companion animals. In addition to serving pet owners, we proudly provide veterinary support for area zoological collections and offer valuable exposure and learning opportunities for veterinary students interested in avian and exotic medicine. Reflecting this broad scope, our caseload consists of approximately 30% avian species, 20% reptiles and amphibians, and 50% small mammals, giving our team extensive experience across a wide variety of exotic animal medicine.

To support this level of care, Avian and Exotic Pet Clinic of Roanoke is a fully equipped veterinary facility designed to provide advanced diagnostics, treatment, and patient care. Our hospital offers comprehensive in-house capabilities that allow our medical team to efficiently evaluate, diagnose, and treat complex cases while maintaining the highest standards of compassionate care.

What truly sets our clinic apart, however, is our experienced, supportive, and dedicated team. We pride ourselves on being problem solvers—combining medical knowledge, critical thinking, teamwork, and strong client communication to create the best possible outcomes for our patients. Our talented veterinary nursing and support staff are passionate about exotic animal medicine and work closely with our doctor to provide exceptional care and education for every client and patient.

Beyond the hospital, our location enhances both our work and lifestyle. Situated in the beautiful Roanoke Valley and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Trail, our practice offers an exceptional quality of life. The region provides endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, kayaking, boating, and exploring nature, while also offering a vibrant local culture, excellent restaurants, arts, entertainment, minimal traffic, and an affordable cost of living.
